WHAT: Sign your name to call for action against shameful antisemitism at a Belgium festival which receives support from UNESCO.
WHO: This letter will be sent to the Belgian Minister of Justice.
WHY: The city of Aalst authorities allowed insulting grotesque caricatures of Jews sitting on bags of money and hoarding diamonds to be paraded through their streets at a family carnival.
A carnival group called Vismooil’n created two large puppets as their 2019 entry for the Aalst carnival, the local edition of ‘mardi gras’ celebrations. Participating groups prepare floats and dance routines, parading them through the streets during the three-day Carnaval.
The event is supported and endorsed by UNESCO, who in 2013 issued a warning to a previous group over the racist nature of their floats. The carnival remains prominently promoted on the UNESCO website.
The Vismooil’n group is a veteran participant that specializes in hyper-realistic puppets. They claim that they created the display to address the issue of rising prices, naming their display “Shabbat Year.” The impression given was that Jewish people control money, are fat because of their wealth and greed, and laugh at others. Money is power, hence Jews control the world.
StandWithUs and IMPAC ( International Movement for Peace and Coexistence) are partnering to call upon the Belgian Justice Minister to take strong action by exercising his legal powers.
