For the second time this week, NBC has broadcasted anti-Jewish stereotypes. First on SNL, where Israel was accused of only vaccinating its Jewish population (untrue, all citizens are able to receive the vaccine) and now on the TV show Nurses. Jewish law does not prevent medical grafts from different genders or races and the words put into a Hasidic Jew’s mouth by the writers represent a gross anti-Jewish stereotype that has zero basis in reality.

On February 20, 2021 on Saturday Night Live, Michael Che accused Israel of vaccinating only “the Jewish half” of their population against COVID-19.

This may have been an uninformed comment, lacking in understanding of Israel’s diverse population or, worse, a ‘blood-libel’ and a lie dressed up and played for laughs. Nearly identical lies have been perpetuated by antisemitic groups, eager to poison public discourse with misinformation about Israel’s rapid vaccination drive. The truth is that this inoculation campaign benefits all Israel’s citizens. Israelis of all backgrounds, including Jews, Muslims, and Christians, have and continue to receive the vaccine. Moreover, Israel has given the vaccine to many Palestinians in East Jerusalem and shared vaccines with the Palestinian Authority to help them protect their healthcare professionals.Israel’s healthcare system is available and equal to all Israeli citizens and an example of coexistence. Those who allege otherwise tend to be extremist groups, who have already relished this ‘joke’ on social media. While over 75% of Israel’s people are Jewish, Arabs and citizens of many other backgrounds comprise the rest of the population. All Israelis over the age of 16, regardless of who they are, have equal and immediate access to vaccinations for the novel coronavirus.
Israel’s rapid vaccination effort and its free, fair and comprehensive rollout should be a source of pride, admiration and celebration. The research that Israeli medical institutions are compiling as a result will help people all over the world.
SNL’s “joke” has already been used to promote antisemitic words and deeds. They and NBC should apologize and disown this dangerous and misleading assertion.
At a time when antisemitic attacks are rising, this horrible, provocative misrepresentation is nothing less than dangerous.
