Thank RTÉ For Supporting Eurovision in Israel

Join StandWithUs and Ireland Israel Alliance in thanking Irish broadcaster RTÉ in supporting Eurovision in Israel.

As you all know, since Israel won the 2018 Eurovision with Netta Barzilai’s “Toy”, there has been pressure on Eurovision organisers to withdraw hosting rights from Israel for the 2019 Eurovision. When that failed, boycotters targeted national broadcasters, attempting to convince them not to participate in the 2019 event.

At the time of writing, an Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign petition to RTÉ for a boycott of Eurovision 2019 has gathered some 10,700 signatures. The IPSC continues to solicit its members to write to RTÉ calling for a boycott.

Together we can fight back against hate, and unite for music!

Dear, RTÉ,

I would like to thank you at RTÉ for taking a principled stand in supporting Eurovision 2019 in Tel Aviv and in resisting calls for a boycott. Boycotts are divisive and do nothing to support peace. Not only are boycotts insulting to the people of Israel, but they also hurt the lives and livelihoods of Palestinians. In the words of respected Arab journalist Khaled Abu Toameh:

“The BDS movement exemplifies the attempt by the Palestinian leadership to destroy the peace process and associated joint initiatives while simultaneously hurting the Palestinian people.”

Peace will only come when the Palestinian leadership takes joint responsibility in ensuring Israel’s borders are secure, and desists from inciting and incentivising violence against Israeli citizens.

Those who wish to take the boycott route should also remember that Ireland and Israel enjoy full diplomatic relations, with trade, academic and cultural partnerships between the two countries continuing to grow, to the mutual benefit of both countries.

Why even bring politics into the Eurovision? Music should bring people together, not create division."
