FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Asheville, NC — January 9th, 2019) — StandWithUs calls on the University of North Carolina – Asheville (UNCA) to clearly and explicitly condemn Tamika Mallory’s anti-Semitic rhetoric and close ties with Louis Farrakhan. Mallory is slated to speak on January 24th, during the university’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Week. In a statement, the UNCA administration rejected calls to cancel the event but claimed to oppose anti-Semitism as well.
“If the administration is genuine about rejecting anti-Semitism and discrimination, it will unequivocally condemn Mallory’s hateful statements toward Jews and praise of Louis Farrakhan,” said Roz Rothstein, CEO of StandWithUs. “Freedom of expression does not mean freedom from criticism for engaging in bigotry. The university should use its own free speech rights to take a moral stand and confront Mallory on this issue.”
Mallory has been widely condemned for supporting vicious anti-Semite and homophobe Louis Farrakhan, making anti-Semitic remarks towards a founder of the Women’s March, and other offensive statements. Many local chapters of the Women’s March have strongly criticized and distanced themselves from the national organization Mallory helps lead, due to her record.
